Cathy Angell

Trainer and Coach

Cathy Angell, M.Ed., is an established leader in the emerging field of science communication. She is the owner of Cathy Angell Communications and has taught more than 3,500 scientists, government officials, and educators how to communicate more effectively. Her trainings include science communication to non-scientists, communicating effectively with decision-makers, writing compelling grant proposals, facilitating effective online meetings, and giving dynamic conference presentations. Cathy has recently added on-demand classes through the Cathy Angell Training Academy. For over 18 years, Cathy worked for Washington’s Department of Ecology (through the Padilla Bay Research Reserve) and coordinated one of the most successful training programs in the country for coastal managers and public officials. When she pursued her Master’s degree in Adult Learning, she incorporated her passion for effective science communication and teaching into classes for scientists and others who work in the environmental realm. Within a short time, her classes gained state and national recognition for methods that are transformational and clearly effect behavior change. In 2014, Cathy received a national communications award from NOAA which is given out each year in her honor. She lives in Bellingham, Washington.

A Strong Reputation Nationally

Cathy's trainings are well loved.

“I've gone to science conferences all over the country. At nearly every one, I've had this experience: If someone gives a particularly good presentation, a person sitting near me says, 'they must have taken Cathy Angell's training.' Or if someone gives a particularly poor presentation, someone near says, 'they NEED to take Cathy Angell's training."”

Julia Wondollek, Associate Professor, University of Michigan

““If I had taken this training in graduate school, it would have changed my life.””

Alex Rosen, Regional Floodplain Management Planner, WA State Department of Ecology, Olympia, WA

““Cathy is an expert at modeling excellent communication practices as she is teaching. The professionals that take Cathy’s courses consistently enjoy how they are fast-paced, connected to brain science, and immediately practical! Cathy has quite a following in the Great Lakes area.””

Karina Heim, Coastal Training Program Coordinator, Lake Superior Research Reserve, Superior, Wisconsin

“This is one of the MOST helpful trainings I've taken on any subject lately!”

Hilary Gallop, Education Coordinator, Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District, Seabrook, NC
